ASER 2020 Rural showed that 11% of rural families bought a new phone after lockdown and 80% of these were smartphones. More children joined government schools than private schools. Around 70% of the community came forward to support schools and almost three quarters of children received some learning support from family members. The report called for digital pedagogy and efforts to break the digital divide. 56% of households with children in government schools had smartphones, compared with 74% of households sending children to private schools. Children in private schools were more likely to access online resources. Only 33.5% of government-school children received materials or activities compared with 40.6% in private schools.
